Making GEOSS a quality immersed system of systems

Formal Call for presentations
Agenda so far
This is a agenda draft that reflects work in progress. Order and time of the presentations can change. People without a question mark are confirmed.
A statistical perspective on quality in GEOSS: challenges and opportunities
In this talk I will address some fundamental questions about what quality really means. I will focus on quality as a measure of the relation of the observations (data) and reality, discussing issues that surround the definition of reality, and describe some natural quality indicators that arise from a probabilistic approach to quality assessment. In particular I will introduce and critique
QA4EO? , and describe a Bayesian framework within which many disparate sources of quantitative probabilistic quality information can be combined. I will also consider quality aspects that are not well addressed within a probabilistic approach. I will link the discussion to existing metadata standards such as ISO19115 and quality standards such as the emerging ISO19157. I will speculate on how best to progress the practical application of quality quantification in the GEOSS context. (Dan Cornford)
The importance of Quality Indicators for Climate
The presentation will review the requirements for Climate ECVs and in particular the need of QI. (Pascal Lecomte)
NETMAR quality concerns
NETMAR aims to develop a pilot European Marine Information System for searching, downloading, integrating and processing online satellite, in situ and model data from ocean and coastal areas. The major contribution of NETMAR is the use of web services from different partners to develop complex model using service orchestration. The project's first year research has focussed onreviewing existing initiatives, projects, frameworks, technologies and tools, and developing and deploying an architecture. In an activity relevant to
GeoViQua? , NETMAR is currently developing the implementation of uncertainty propagation using
NetCDF? files, in close collaboration with
UncertWEB? project. The intended outcome is allow for uncertainty to be used in NETMAR's study cases, with OGC web services and, critically, to be visualized in webGUIs. (Jorge de Jesus)
